Day Four in Silly Billy’s New Shop

Day Four in Silly Billy‘s New Shop

Also Duck Race Day in Hebden Bridge and if you cannot make it to the Duck Race which starts this afternoon at 3:15 pm or so you can still buy tickets online if you check out the link in this post about the Duck race

Trading has been brisk at Silly Billy‘s since we re-opened and we are very grateful to all our customers old and new that are coming into the shop and spending money with us. Let’s keep it local and keep the Independent Shopping Town of Hebden Bridge as diverse as possible despite the terrible flooding of Boxing Day 2015

On Saturday we had a new staff member arrive at the Shop who will hopefully keep thieves at bay and makes a nice addition to the outside area.

Toy Shop Video

We have opened for the first time in our new location at Old Gate House in Hebden Bridge, that’s nearly opposite the wavey steps where people feed the ducks.

Chris from Rogue Robot Industries came into the shop with his children and created a video for us in 90 minutes so many thanks to him. We are open today at Old Gate House, our new location, directly opposite Watergate Tea Rooms, sadly Watergate Tea Rooms is still shut after the devastation suffered in the Boxing Day Floods and will open after Easter when they have finished their renovation project.

We are very excited to be open now in our new location and hope you will come and visit us soon

Chris said that he managed to create the video above in just 90 minutes which is very impressive.

Please follow us on Facebook or Twitter to keep up to date with all the latest news at Silly Billy‘s and also in hebden Bridge. Don’t forget it is Duck race Duck Race Day on Easter Monday which is always a very exciting event.

Titanosaur: the largest animal ever to walk the Earth

A new species of titanosaur discovered in Argentina is the largest animal ever to walk the Earth.

Silly Billy‘s Specialises in Dinosaurs having many Dinosaurs on sale and some very fantastic scaled dinosaurs as created and hand painted by Schleich.
Hopefully this Gigantic Dinosaur will soon be one recreated bySchleich

How do you eat a skip full of food every day without ever chewing? How do you walk on tiptoes when youre the length of four London buses? How do you have sex when you weigh 70 tons? While the answers to these three questions is probably with great difficulty, scientists are tackling such improbable questions after uncovering what is undoubtedly the biggest dinosaur excavation of all time.

In the spring of 2014, a lone farmer scanned his land, looking for a lost sheep. He thought there was something odd about the rocky ledge his grizzled old sheep was perched on. Dinosaur finds arent uncommon in the area but the outcrop was huge could it really be a bone? He called in the scientists. When they determined that the ledge was in fact the 8ft thigh bone of a dinosaur, this sleepy Argentinian farm became the most important dinosaur dig site for more than 100 years.

Since its discovery, an international team of biologists, Hollywood model makers, a BBC film crew and palaeontologists, led by Dr Diego Pol and his colleagues from the Museum of Paleontology Egidio Feruglio in Argentina, has worked tirelessly and after 40,000 hours work, the results are astounding. The team discovered that not only was this giant herbivore a new species but it was the largest dinosaur ever, dwarfing its closest competitors. Whats more, the team found that seven of these animals actually died in the exact same spot, across at least three different occasions, approximately 101.6 million years ago.

This new dinosaur belongs to a group known as the sauropods, the long-necked, big-bodied beasts usually found roaming around in herds in the background of Hollywood dinosaur blockbusters. If youve seen Dippy at the Natural History Museum in London, then youll know what a sauropod is. Within this fascinating group of large herbivorous dinosaurs, however, a subsection is known as the titanosaurs and, as the name suggests, these are the real giants the ones that literally shook the ground. They followed on from the extinction of smaller sauropods, such as the better-known diplodocids and brachiosauridae, and were found across the world. South America is especially rich in titanosaur fossils and already, true giants such as Puertasaurus and Argentinosaurus have been unearthed there.

Describing any new species can be a delicate subject, so introducing the largest dinosaur to both the scientific community and the wider world will be a huge task. Everyone wants their giant dinosaur to hold the title of biggest and, with multiple methods for assessing size to choose from, the team needed to be certain of what theyd found. Body size estimations can vary according to the technique used and on how much of the skeleton is retrieved. Estimates for the previous biggest dinosaur, Argentinosaurus, are based on fewer than 20 bones and Puertasaurus size estimates on just four vertebrae.

The difference with this newly discovered titanosaur is that much of the skeleton has been found. From the seven individuals, 223 bones have been recovered to date, allowing Pol and his team to use multiple methods to develop a reliable size estimate. Their results show that this dinosaur was 37m in length and weighed 70 metric tons, making it the largest animal ever to walk the face of the planet.

These dinosaurs had to sustain this incredible weight on four specially adapted column-like legs. They were so big they probably used the heavy musculature running from their thighs to halfway down their tails to gain momentum for walking. Whats more, in order to survive the stresses and fractures that could easily result from such extreme weights, these animals not only evolved to reduce the toes in their forelimbs, forcing them to walk on horseshoe-shaped stumps of reduced metacarpal bones, they walked on tiptoes, with huge fleshy pads cushioning the impact as they moved.

Weighing as much as up to 15 African elephants, this new species of dinosaur hasnt even been named yet and although we still cant fully explain why seven animals were found together, the 80 or so giant serrated carnivore teeth from an unknown killer found alongside the bones hint at a murderous end for these gentle giants. However, as a lifesize replica skeleton is unveiled at New Yorks American Museum of Natural History, this super-size discovery is set not only to inspire a new generation of dinosaur fans but will stoke the fires of scientific debate for years to come.

Ben Garrod is an evolutionary biologist based at Anglia Ruskin University who appears in Attenborough and the Giant Dinosaur, BBC1, Sunday 24 Jan at 6.30pm

Silly Billy’s Big Move

Silly Billy‘s Big Move started today

We would firstly like to Publicly thank all those people that helped us with the move today, Alan from the local paper shop, Les from Something Sweet (best sweet shop in Hebden), Kevin from Bluemoose Books, Alex from goodness knows where, and Dave the driver and provider of the Van. Also Bill for working all day and George (Bill’s son) for working after college.

So we have got a lovely counter now installed in the shop plus all the products that were stored at Welcome Independent Living and in Our Pop Up Shop, thanks again to Mark Coup.

The author was very busy moving stock and helping with the process today and forgot to take any pictures of the progress, silly me. It was a good move overall with the three van loads completed by lunchtime. Obviously we have also been negotiating logistics with the Environment Agency workers who have been busy dredging the river. We will be open on Good Friday and now have much tidying and shelf sorting to carry out, plus other stands from suppliers and products coming into the shop. We are looking forward to retailing from that location very much and hope it will see our business improve. We welcome any feedback.

Hebden Bridge Duck Race 2016

Hebden Bridge Duck Race 2016

Just had an interesting chat with a Hebden Bridge Round Table representative who explained that the footfall around Hebden was a lot less than last year and there were a lot of Duck Race Tickets left to sell, especially as the amount of Ducks in the digger bucket has increased from 8,000 to 10,000

The Hebden Bridge Duck Race is a great event and last year it was amazingly busy in Hebden Bridge and also very warm, with Easter earlier this year and also the number of people in Hebden Bridge being generally lower due to the terrible flooding on Boxing Day, the Rotary Club are concerned that ticket sales may be lower. The good news is that you no longer have to live in or near Hebden Bridge to get a ticket, you cam now buy tickets online from the Hebden Bridge Rotary Duck race page here

Please buy a ticket or two to support the cause which you can do online or from shops and sellers in Hebden Bridge

The World’s Happiest Countries Have Been Revealed

Who cares about high taxes and cold winters when you’ve got Lego’s, green energy and pastries? The fourth World Happiness Report is out, and Denmark has topped the tables once again.

Denmark’s chirpiness comes as no surprise. Western Europe has previously dominated the top of their past happiness reports. In addition, Denmark was ranked first in  Happiness Report and third in 2015.

In order, the countries following Denmark were Switzerland, Iceland, Norway, Finland, Canada, Netherlands, New Zealand, Australia, and then Sweden. The top 10 contains the exact same countries as the report in 2015, albeit in a different order.

The least happy countries in the study were Burundi, Syria, Togo, Afghanistan, Benin, Rwanda, Guinea, and Liberia.

In total, the study looked at 157 different countries. Each country’s happiness was measured using six variables: GDP per capita, social support, healthy life expectancy, social freedom, generosity, and perception of corruption. The scores of these six factors were then compared  hypothetical country that contained all of the worst scores. This acted as a benchmark for the worst possible country.

Measuring self-reported happiness and achieving well-being should be on every nations agenda as they begin to pursue the Sustainable Development Goals, said Jeffrey Sachs, director of the Earth Institute at Columbia University, who contributed to the report.

Indeed, the Goals themselves embody the very idea that human well-being should be nurtured through a holistic approach that combines economic, social and environmental objectives.

Rather than taking a narrow approach focused solely on economic growth, we should promote societies that are prosperous, just, and environmentally sustainable.

Environmental sustainability certainly seems to be a big one for Denmark. Not only were they listed alongside the U.K. as the top country for combating climate change, this year they’ve also broken their own world record for wind power generation and opened the worlds first ugly and expired food supermarket.

The report was released in anticipation of the UNs World Happiness Day on March 20. You can read the entire study online right here.
